Artex used to be a popular approach to finishing walls and ceilings. Artex is a water based covering which is scraped and made into a textured surface. It can look a bit old-fashioned nowadays, though, and a number of homeowners are looking to get rid of the artex in their homes. Always be careful when managing artex, particularly older artex, as it could contain asbestos. Asbestos was found in some older artexes, so ensure that you have a survey done to make certain of whether it is present in your artex, since it could really limit the options available for artex removal.
There are lots of techniques available to remove artex. One is by using a steam stripper to heat up the artex to the point where it can be scraped away. However, this may sometimes damage the wall or ceiling behind the artex, so it is at times worth going straight back to the original plasterboard or wall base. Additionally, there are products available which can make this technique of eliminating artex easier. These products just need to be applied over the artex and then to be left for a period of time, often overnight. They are able to then be removed along with the artex. Another option for artex removal is to simply plaster over it. This will require any especially high details of the existing artex to be sanded down, and then plaster can be applied over the top for a smooth surface finish. Artex can also have plasterboard installed over the top and then be plastered over. Additionally, some artex can be covered with a thick wallpaper.
Regardless of the technique used, artex removal is certainly possible, provided appropriate care is taken around the possible occurrence of asbestos.

There are three sides to the village of Abberley. The oldest section, The Village, has been around since the 12th and 13th century. There are two churches in Abberley. The longest-standing is the run-down St. Michael’s Church, but the chancel was restored and is still used for occassional services. St. Mary’s Church was erected between 1850 and 1852 to take over from St. Michael’s to the north of the parish.
