Electrical work in the bathroom is covered by a variety of additional regulations. Repair or replacing electrical appliances and also circuits in the bathroom must exclusively be conducted by a certified electrician. Electricity and water present a considerable risk when in close proximity, and so care should be taken around electrical circuits in the bathroom at all times.

There is a variety of electrical circuits and appliances that are typical in bathrooms. Electric showers and extractor fans are frequently installed in bathrooms. These should be secured by an independent RCD, and be controlled by a pull cord switch. Any electric heating, whether it’s a towel rail or underfloor heating, needs to be rated for use in bathrooms and correctly fitted. Similarly, all electrical sockets should be fitted with appropriate switch protection.

Electrical circuits and sockets in the bathroom are controlled by zones. These zones designate which electrical appliances can be fitted in which area of the bathroom. The zones start with zone 0, which is on the floor of the shower or in the bathtub, and go up to zone 3, which are regions of the bathroom which are indirectly affected by water, for instance by condensation. Electrical outlets may only be installed further than 3 metres away from the bath or shower.

Accredited electricians can help you understand the laws which cover electrical work in the bathroom. They will be able to recommend for you the most appropriate strategy to fit the electrical appliances and plug sockets you would like to have in your bathroom and ensure that all electrical circuits are installed safely.
