There are several different kinds of bees. Hardly any bees in the United Kingdom are dangerous, although some can create a nuisance if they nest near doorways or windows. While bees are not protected, they are endangered. Bees are a critical part of the local ecosystem and so should not be relocated or eliminated unless it is absolutely essential.

The most prevalent species of bee in the UK are honey bees, bumblebees and tree bumblebees. There are many sub species of these. All of the varieties can sting, although will only sting as a last resort. The various species like to nest in several areas. For instance, tree bumblebees generally nest in bird boxes or other enclosed areas in trees.

If you have a swarm or nest of bees that you need to get moved, it’s best to contact a beekeeper who’ll be able to come and safely gather the bees. They could take them off to their own site, or be able to relocate the nest to a nearby area that is less disruptive. The British Beekeepers Association are a charity that establish standards for trained beekeepers.
