A consumer unit is the name for the new style of fuse boxes that use breakers rather than non-reusable fuses. Consumer units are much safer than fuse boxes as they trip more quickly, and can have RCD protection fitted as well. Building regulations stipulate that consumer units with circuit breakers which can be reset are chosen in any property where the electrical wiring is considerably changed. Recently fitted consumer units need to comply with the building regulations and relevant British Standards.

Installing a new consumer unit is a complicated job and needs to only be undertaken by an accredited electrician. It’s important that the breakers and RCDs are appropriately graded for the circuits that they are defending. If they are not accurately rated, they might fail to switch off when required or trigger annoyance tripping. This means that the circuit breaker will trip frequently when it does not need to.

If you have a modern consumer unit, you might also need to have the rest of your property’s wiring updated. This is in order to be sure that the new setup is as safe as possible. As the consumer unit needs to effectively defend all the electrical circuits in the house, it’s important that they are properly detected. Having a new consumer unit might consequently be a disruptive and costly task. That being said, getting a new consumer unit fitted to replace an outdated or defective one will provide you peace of mind that your house’s electrics are properly protected. Certified electricians will have the ability to execute the work of fitting a new consumer unit in a way that minimises the disruption to your home.
